I remember one day in Psych 111, sitting in the back and seeing this really cute redhead come in with a couple other people and sit up in the second row. She definitely caught my eye, but then I didn’t see her again after that. It must have been the next week, I was now sitting up in the second row, and that very same cute redhead I saw before, came and sat right next to me.
So, of course I introduced myself to her. She said her name was McKenna and that’s where our story begins…
We continued to sit by each other and I really started to “like” her. As McKenna mentioned before, she was really trying to avoid me, even though I think we all know she liked me. 😉
I remember this one time she totally gave me the slip. We had just got out of class and we were talking. If you’re not familiar with BYUI, they have these little stores in some of the buildings that have sandwiches and other foods. She was getting in line to buy a sandwich and I wanted to keep talking to her, so I got in line too. I didn’t want to be weird and just stand there watching her buy her food, so I grabbed a bottle of water. She paid for her sandwich first and while I was buying the bottle of water, she was like, “ok, see ya later” and walked off. She is a really fast walker, and by the time I got out the door she was gone.
Ordinary men might have given up after that. But, I’m no ordinary man, so I kept trying. 😉
She later told me that she darted into the gardens next to the building and walked through them, so that I wouldn’t find her.
A lot of times, I would get nervous and not know what to say to girls that I liked. But, with McKenna, I was still nervous, but she was really easy to talk to. We got along really well and I felt like I could be myself around her. So, one day, I got up the courage to ask her out on a date. I walked with her from the top of campus to the bottom, where she had her next class.
Before she went into the building, we stopped outside the door, right next to that special garbage can that McKenna mentioned. We’ll talk more about that later. Standing across that garbage can from each other, I asked her what she was doing that weekend.
She told me that she wouldn’t be able to get together because she was going out of town for her sister’s baptism, and paused. I’m sure you can all hear the audible heartbreak that I just experienced. For a moment, I didn’t think it was going to happen.
Then, there was a big but… McKenna said, “But, I’m available next weekend”. That was it! It was game over for her folks! So, we scheduled a date and I was on cloud nine!
I didn’t want to do some lame date or something that everyone and their dog does. So, I decided I’d have her over to my apartment and we’d make dinner together. Not just any meal though, biscuit tacos. I remember sitting in the laundry room at my apartment complex and calling McKenna.
Heart racing, I asked her, “Do you like biscuits?”. She responded, “Yes”. “Do you like tacos?”. “Yes.”. I could tell she was a little confused. So, I told her we’d be making biscuit tacos. They’re something my mom used to make, so it’s kind of a family recipe. I think she was interested, but definitely confused. I mean, who’s heard of biscuit tacos, right?
So, the day came, I picked her up for our date, and I don’t remember what she was wearing, but I know she looked beautiful. We went to my place and made dinner together. We had a great time. She was easy to talk to, and even though I’ll always be nervous around her, it wasn’t hard to be myself. It wasn’t hard to find things to talk about, and I felt like we had a lot in common.
Here’s a funny story from our date to end on. McKenna used to be in drama and theater. We got to talking about stage combat, and then she wanted to show me how to pretend to kill someone. So, she ended up killing me on our first date. It was a little weird, but it obviously didn’t scare me off!
