Originally, I chose to step away from Photography so that I could be more present in my daughters lives. It was taking up too much time and energy. Then, skip to this year, Clayton and I decided to go into business together. My first thought was “how am I supposed to do this?”. So in order to be involved in my young kids lives the way I want, we’ve learned some tricks!
Work when they sleep. I know I know, that’s obvious. However, it’s easy to get burnt out after a work day and want to just relax. So work when they sleep, and set a very specific time for work. For us, we work from 8:30 – 10:30pm every night except Friday (date night) and Sunday. We have worked very hard to get both girls on the same bed time, and now we have a solid 2 hours every night where we can get in the groove to get things done!
Utilize nap time! How? I choose to do the same work task every day at this time. For me it’s posting to social Media. It needs to happen every day, so this way I make sure to not forget to post, and I actually get things done. I don’t know about you, but it’s easy for me to get overwhelmed when I finally have time for myself. As soon as both girls as sleeping my brain goes to “okay what are all the MILLION things I can get done while they are sleeping!!” Then, Brooklyn nine nine gets turned on magically! So utilize nap time!
Have a specific time set aside every day just for “play”. It’s so easy to not do this. This is my favorite tip because it’s made the most impact for my relationships with my daughters, specifically my toddler. For us, play time is always 11:30 – 12:30 just before Joyce’s nap time. Joyce happens to love to dance, so for part of play time I do a dance hit workout with her to kill two birds with one stone! She loves it 🙂
So yeah, having young kids while you try to be an entrepreneur is hard. There are times I feel like a horrible mom because I’m working to much, and times I feel like a horrible business owner. The nice part about being in business with my husband is that we can help balance work life and parent life together. In the future our goal is to only work 4 days a week, two days I would work the first half of the day while he watched the kids and vice versa. We will get there soon!
