McKenna ~ This was our first time working together doing both photo and video!! It was so much fun going downtown rexburg with Bri and Benson who were the perfect models! Since this was our first “official” video we have ever filmed, we thought it would be fun to share our top three takeaways from the videography course Clayton has been doing, “full time film maker.”
Clayton ~ As McKenna and I begin this new adventure of adding videography to the business, it has become clear to us that we don’t know enough about it. We need a little help, if we are to achieve the results we want.
Even with a photography background, it has only helped us so much. Videography is a different beast and we lack a lot of knowledge about it.
I don’t want to be a mediocre videographer who makes videos that aren’t that good, simply because I just don’t know. There’s a learning curve for sure, but learning curves can be shortened if you get the right help.
Over the past few weeks, I’ve been going through a course called Full Time Filmmaker. It’s been super helpful, especially because we didn’t know where to start. So, I wanted to share my top 3 takeaways from the course so far, and give you guys a little insight into how things are going.
The first thing that sticks out to me, is that even with this great and helpful education, I still need to practice like crazy! I can’t tell you how many times I have gone out to practice taking videos and couldn’t remember what they had taught, or I just forget that there was something I could have been working on.
Plus, I learn things that will prepare me for shooting weddings in the future. Like today, I went out to practice and didn’t even think to check the battery. It was dying as soon as I got started.
I had planned an hour to practice, and it lasted almost the entire time, but died right before I was about to get a shot I really wanted. Good thing I’m learning to think about this now, because that would be really bad on a wedding day!
When you first think about wedding videography, what’s the first thoughts that come to mind?
For me, it’s being out and taking videos of couples. I think about the posing, the locations and the awesome videos I could make for people. But, one of the last things I think about, is the part about downloading all the clips onto your computer, sifting through all the footage, putting it together and making it sync up to a song.
It’s all of that and then some. It can be a little bit daunting at times, because I don’t know how to use the software for editing yet. So, I’m learning how to shoot the videos (how to use the camera, the stabilizer, etc.) and I’m learning how to edit videos on the computer. Videography is a two-sided skill.
We’ve been watching wedding videos on YouTube like crazy! One of the teachers in Full Time Filmmaker, Jake Weisler, has amazing videos.
As we’ve watched his and many others, we noticed that we really liked his videos the best, and it was because of the audio. They teach about telling a story with your video, and the audio you can capture from the big day, makes the story even better.
After watching a bunch of videos with audio, The videos without audio just seemed so flat. So my goal is to work my way up to being able to get all the equipment needed for recording audio, so that I can give that service to our clients. It’s just that much better! And I plan on improving every video I do, and becoming the best I can be at what I’m doing. There You Have It!
Those are 3 of my takeaways from going through the Full Time Filmmaker course. Practice like crazy, The Importance of learning BOTH sides of the skill, and Audio makes videos that much better. I plan to implement each of these and I hope I can knock your socks off by doing so!
